What is the SSDI review process in Maine?

Once you're approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in Maine, your case isn’t considered permanent. The Social Security Administration (SSA) periodically reviews all SSDI recipients to determine if they are still eligible for benefits. This is known as a Continuing Disability Review (CDR).

Understanding the SSDI review process in Maine can help you prepare and avoid unnecessary stress.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

How Often Are Reviews Conducted?

The frequency of your SSDI review depends on the nature and severity of your medical condition:

  • Expected improvement: Every 6–18 months
  • Possible improvement: Every 3 years
  • No expected improvement: Every 5–7 years

You’ll be notified in writing by the SSA before a review begins.

What Happens During the Review?

During a review, the SSA will evaluate whether your condition still meets their definition of disability. This usually includes:

  • A review of your medical records
  • Information from your doctor(s)
  • Possible requests for updated forms or additional documentation
  • Sometimes, a consultative exam may be scheduled if more medical evidence is needed

You’ll typically receive a short-form review if you’re not expected to improve, or a long-form review (more detailed) if your condition was expected to improve.

What Do You Need to Provide?

You may be asked to provide:

  • Updated medical treatment history
  • Names and contact info for your healthcare providers
  • Any new diagnoses or changes in treatment
  • Work activity since approval (even part-time work must be reported)

If you’ve been working, SSA will also evaluate whether your income exceeds their Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limit.

What Are the Outcomes?

After the review, the SSA may:

  • Continue your benefits (if your disability remains unchanged)
  • Stop your benefits (if medical improvement has occurred and you can now work)

If your benefits are stopped, you have the right to appeal that decision and may continue receiving benefits during the appeals process under certain conditions.
