What happens after an SSDI approval in Maine?

Receiving an approval for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Maine is a major milestone—but your journey isn’t over. After you're approved, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will take you through several post-approval steps before you begin receiving your full benefits.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Award Letter and Payment Schedule

Once approved, you will receive an official award letter from the SSA. This letter outlines:

  • Your monthly benefit amount
  • The date your payments will begin
  • Any back pay you are owed
  • Information about Medicare eligibility

This letter may take several weeks to arrive, but it is your formal confirmation that your benefits are starting.

2. Receiving Back Pay

Most SSDI recipients in Maine are entitled to back pay, which covers the time between when you became disabled and when your claim was approved. This amount is typically paid in a lump sum, usually within 60 days after the award notice.

3. Monthly Payments Begin

Your regular SSDI payments will begin shortly after the back pay is disbursed. Payments are typically sent monthly, directly deposited into your bank account. The exact payment date is based on your birth date:

  • 1st–10th: paid on the second Wednesday of the month
  • 11th–20th: third Wednesday
  • 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday

4. Medicare Coverage

After 24 months of SSDI payments, you automatically become eligible for Medicare, regardless of age. The SSA will notify you as your Medicare eligibility date approaches.

5. Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs)

SSDI is not a permanent guarantee. The SSA conducts Continuing Disability Reviews every 3 to 7 years (or sooner, depending on your condition) to ensure you’re still eligible. You'll be required to:

  • Submit updated medical information
  • Report any work activity
  • Respond to questionnaires

6. Reporting Requirements

You must notify the SSA if there are any changes in your condition, employment status, income, or address. Failure to report changes could impact your benefits or result in overpayment penalties.
